 Usos de la coma

Los principales usos de la coma son los siguientes:
1. Enumeraciones. La coma separa los componentes de una enumeración, ya sea de palabras, frases u oraciones. Ahora bien, si el último componente se une al anterior mediante una conjunción (y, e, o, u, ni), no se pone coma. 
2. Incisos. Se le llama «inciso» a la expresión que se intercala en otra con autonomía gramatical para explicar algo relacionado con esta. En caso de incisos, se utilizan dos comas,  una delante del comienzo del inciso y otra al final, excepto si el inciso se encuentra al final de la oración. 
3. Vocativos. El vocativo va seguido de una coma, si está al principio; precedido de una coma, si está al final; y entre comas, si se encuentra en medio de una oración. 
4. Subordinadas que anteceden una oración principal. Se pone coma al final de la subordinada. 
5. Enlaces. Los enlaces como además, en tal caso, por tanto, en cambio, en primer lugar, es decir, esto es, o sea, no obstante, sin embargo, etc., se separan con comas. Por igual, ciertos adverbios o locuciones como generalmente, por lo general, en definitiva, cuando desempeñan la función de modificadores oracionales.
La presencia de una coma en un escrito no responde siempre a la necesidad de hacer una pausa en la lectura; y viceversa, en la lectura de un texto, hay pausas breves que no deben marcarse mediante comas.
Los gramáticos modernos prefieren usar la coma con frugalidad. La nueva norma es: «cuanto menos comas, mejor». «La coma debe usarse sólo cuando es imprescindible para delimitar el significado exacto que deseamos transmitir. Siempre que consideremos opinable una coma escribiremos mejor omitiéndola».
